I just love utilities. It's definitely a bonus if it does useful things. And if it looks good. And it must be free. And if I find it on Sunday it can only mean I just have to write about it.

So here it is... qliner hotkeys.

It let's you assign Win + <any key> shortcuts visually and, of course, use them. It's not new idea but it certainlly is the best execution of that idea I have seen so far.

I really liked some default assignments:

  • Win + Space = My Explorer (really handy, much better than Win + E)
  • Win + T = Clock (build in customizable clock)

A nice feature for all those 20th century typists (yap, Mare, I'm thinking of you) that still use keyboards without the Win key. hotkeys can use Caps Lock instead of Win key!

Unfortunattely there is a dark side. hotkeys uses RAM. Lots of it. Too bad. Anyway, I'll give it a week and see if it joins my must-have tools list.

How much RAM does it use? I am using a href="http://www.autohotkey.com/">AutoHotkey</a>, which lets you customize a zillion of thing, program mouse movements etc. I will check later today how much RAM that one uses.

http://www.autohotkey.com that is. No offence, but the comments system here is not that great. I had to re-type the first message twice, because I made a mistake in the code word and then the whole URL, cause it got messed up. I guess it's OK if you comment a lot you get used to it.

AutoHotkey uses 676K RAM. But I think that also depends on what size script you load up in it.
