I have been searching for a right solution for my note taking and to-do list management for a while. I'm not talk my business related tasks, those live in Jira, I'm talking about my own day to day blogging/shopping/testing/installing/don't forget stuff.
I have tried everything from Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft OneNote to various applications and web services like Google Notebook or BackPack. I think I found a right combination at last...
For to-do lists I use Todoist.
Todoist typical slick Web 2.0 app.
What I like about it is it's speed and simplicity, Google Mail integration via Firefox plugin and keyboard shortcuts. And price - it's free.
For note taking I took a low tech road - I use Notepad2
But with a twist - I made up a new file extension .note which I mapped to "Configuration files" color scheme. So Notepad2 thinks I'm editing and old school .INI file and if write title in square brackets it gets emphasized.
I indent lines with a tab, so I can put different marks in front of the line, like X for done, ? for figure it out and so on. I can "comment out" a line with a semicolon sign in front.
I constantly invent new rules in my head, but I think you get the point.
Of course, I sync notes across my computers with FolderShare.
